Paul Desmond – Blue Rondo À La Turk

I continue to power through the “Time Out” album. For some reason I’m just now getting around to track 1. This is a cool tune with the melody primarily being in a fast 9/8 (2+2+2+3) and the solos being in a slow 4/4 swing.

My video starts with the first of Paul’s solo fills, continues through his solo, then cuts to the end where he does some more solo fills into the melody to end the track. The PDF charts out the whole track from beginning to end.

  1. Just wanted to say thanks for transcribing Paul Desmond’s solo on Blue Rondo a la Turk. It’s been more than 50 years since I first listened to “Time Out” and memorized the sax part on Take Five. Five decades later, I’ve decided to tackle Blue Rondo a la Turk. Your excellent video and careful transcription have encouraged me to give it a try. Many thanks

  2. I think that chords progressions on Desmond’s solo not right.Because this chords not sound with original bass line, it’s sound dissonance

    1. I wrote the chords transposed for Alto Sax, so they would be off by a minor sixth if you are playing them on piano. It’s also possible that I made mistakes, in which case I apologize 🙂
